Key Applications

How Bentonite is Used

Slurry Walls & Diaphragm Walls (Civil Engineering Grade Bentonite)

Excavation Support Bentonite slurry fills the trench and exerts outward hydrostatic pressure, preventing collapse of trench walls in soft or water-saturated soils. The thixotropic properties allow the slurry to gel at rest and flow under agitation, enabling seamless excavation and concrete placement cycles.

Filter Cake Formation Bentonite particles migrate into the soil face and form a thin, low-permeability filter cake (typically < 2 mm) that reduces fluid loss into permeable formations by 85–95%. This maintains trench stability and minimizes groundwater contamination during construction.

Groundwater Cutoff Soil-bentonite and cement-bentonite cutoff walls achieve hydraulic conductivity of 1 × 10⁻⁷ cm/sec or lower, effectively blocking groundwater flow for dam foundations, contaminated site containment, and deep basement construction.

Typical specifications:

  • Slurry density: 1.02–1.10 g/cm³
  • Marsh funnel viscosity: 32–50 seconds
  • Bentonite concentration: 4–6% by weight of water
  • Sand content: < 4% (preferably < 2%)
  • Filter press fluid loss: < 15 ml/30 min

Target customers: General contractors for high-rise buildings, metro/subway construction companies, dam builders, environmental remediation firms, deep foundation specialists.

Foundation Waterproofing (Waterproofing Grade Bentonite)

Below-Grade Barrier Sodium bentonite swells 12–15 times its dry volume upon contact with groundwater, forming an impermeable barrier around foundations, tunnels, and underground structures. The self-sealing capability allows the barrier to bridge cracks up to 6 mm without repair.

Self-Healing Properties Unlike synthetic membranes, bentonite waterproofing systems can self-repair minor punctures and penetrations when confined under hydrostatic pressure (minimum 30–60 PSF). This eliminates the most common failure mode of conventional waterproofing systems.

Blindside & Pre-Applied Applications Bentonite membranes can be installed before concrete is poured (blindside application), making them ideal for deep excavations in congested urban sites where traditional post-applied waterproofing is impossible.

Product forms:

  • Bentonite waterproofing sheets/panels: sodium bentonite (5.5 kg/m²) between geotextile layers
  • HDPE-bentonite composite membranes: 20-mil HDPE + sodium bentonite + polypropylene fabric
  • Spray-applied bentonite: polymer-modified bentonite mastic for complex geometries
  • Granular bentonite: for detail work around penetrations, joints, and corners

Target customers: Waterproofing subcontractors, commercial building developers, tunnel construction companies, underground parking builders, residential foundation contractors.

Geosynthetic Clay Liners — GCL (Environmental Grade Bentonite)

Landfill Containment GCLs provide hydraulic conductivity of 5 × 10⁻⁹ cm/sec — approximately 20 times lower than compacted clay liners. One GCL layer (< 25 mm thick) replaces 600–1000 mm of compacted clay, saving material costs and installation time by 60–70%.

Self-Sealing & Puncture Resistance Sodium bentonite between needle-punched geotextile layers self-heals punctures up to 50 mm and self-seams at overlaps when hydrated. This provides fail-safe containment that compacted clay cannot match.

Freeze-Thaw Resistance Unlike compacted clay liners that crack and degrade under freeze-thaw and wet-dry cycles, GCLs maintain consistent permeability performance in all climate conditions from –20°C to +60°C.

Typical specifications:

  • Bentonite mass per unit area: 3.2–6.0 kg/m²
  • Permeability: ≤ 5 × 10⁻⁹ cm/sec (hydrated, confined)
  • Peel strength: ≥ 65 N
  • Hydrostatic pressure resistance: 0.5 MPa, 24 hours, no leakage
  • Swell index: ≥ 24 ml/2g (ASTM D5890)

Target customers: Landfill operators, environmental engineering firms, mining companies (tailings containment), pond/reservoir constructors, government environmental agencies.

Grouting & Soil Stabilization (Construction Grade Bentonite)

Void Filling & Sealing Bentonite grout is injected into soil or rock formations to fill voids, seal fissures, and reduce permeability. Bentonite adjusts to minor ground movements without losing its seal — a critical advantage over rigid cement grout in dynamic soil conditions.

Pipe Jacking Lubrication Bentonite slurry reduces friction between pipe surfaces and surrounding soil by 40–60% during microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations. This allows longer pipe installation runs and reduces equipment wear.

Soil Improvement Mixing bentonite with sandy or permeable soils reduces their hydraulic conductivity by 2–3 orders of magnitude. Application rates of 3–8% bentonite by dry weight transform permeable soils into effective barriers for water retention and containment.

Typical formulations:

  • Grouting slurry: 8–15% bentonite by weight
  • Cement-bentonite grout: 3–5% bentonite + 10–15% cement
  • HDD lubrication: 3–6% bentonite slurry
  • Soil mixing: 3–8% bentonite by dry weight of soil

Target customers: Tunneling contractors, HDD drilling companies, geotechnical engineering firms, road construction companies, utility installation contractors.

Benefits

Why Choose Askangel Bentonite

Advantages of Askangel Bentonite for Construction

High Montmorillonite Content 98.5% montmorillonite ensures maximum swelling capacity (swell index > 24 ml/2g) and superior filter cake formation. Competitors from Turkey, India, and China typically offer 70–85% montmorillonite, resulting in higher consumption rates and inferior sealing performance.

Ultra-Low Permeability The purity of Askangel bentonite delivers hydraulic conductivity below 5 × 10⁻⁹ cm/sec in GCL applications and fluid loss under 12 ml/30 min in slurry wall operations — exceeding API and EN standards by significant margins.

Consistent Rheological Properties Askangel controls the full production cycle: proprietary deposit → enrichment → drying → grinding. Each batch is laboratory-tested for Marsh viscosity, gel strength, filtration, and sand content before shipment, ensuring project-to-project consistency.

Low Crystalline Silica Content < 1% free SiO₂ ensures compliance with EU workplace exposure limits (Directive 2017/2398) and OSHA silica standards. Critical for worker safety during on-site mixing and handling operations.

Compliance with International Standards Askangel construction-grade bentonite meets API 13A (drilling fluids), EN 1538 (diaphragm walls), ASTM D5890 (swell index), and GRI-GCL3 (geosynthetic clay liners) requirements.

Flexible Logistics Bulk shipments (rail cars, trucks), big bags (500 kg, 1000 kg, 1250 kg), 25 kg bags. FOB Poti, DAP to your warehouse, CIF to destination port. Emergency deliveries within 5–7 business days for ongoing construction projects.
